Nest Box Update 6.4.24

Top Photo: Eastern bluebird eggs.

We have eight bluebird nestlings in two separate nests. Four of our nest boxes are empty with no activity.

The Cow Pasture, Explore the Wild, Into the Mist, and Parking Deck East nest boxes are all empty, but ready to go should any local avian cavity nesters feel the urge.

There are three more nest boxes like this one (Into the Mist – 6.4.24).

Last week I predicted that the five bluebird nestlings in the nest box on the west side of the parking deck will have fledged by this week’s inspection. I was wrong. They were peeking out of the entrance hole, then huddled down together in the nest as we cracked open the door. I didn’t want to disturb them and cause a premature fledge. So we took a few quick pics and left.

Crowded together and ready to fly the coop (6.4.24).

Wrong again. I predicted that a fourth egg inside the Butterfly House nest box would have hatched after viewing three freshly hatched nestlings and an egg in the nest last week. Apparently the egg never hatched. I still count only three nestlings.

I count three nestling at Butterfly House (6.4.24).

If the nestlings in the nest box on the west side of the parking deck don’t fledge within the day I’d be very surprised. Of course, I’ve been wrong before, but they are READY!

So, I expect to see our final three nestlings in the Butterfly House nest one more time before they fledge.

Will there be one more brood? Stay tuned to find out!
