Nest Box Update 2.28.23

Top Photo: Eastern bluebird eggs (from previous season).

Not much has changed since last week’s nest box inspection. The same two nest boxes have been active, though one in a negative manner. There is definitely interest in both boxes.

The Cow Pasture nest box holds a near complete bluebird nest. The bluebirds have been busy. Too early for eggs?

The Explore the Wild and Into the Mist nest boxes are untouched.

The nest box on the east side of the Parking Deck had a few pine needles and grass stems inside its cedar frame last week, the work of bluebirds. However, the nest material has been removed. I suspect chickadees since two were hovering in the area when I made the nest box inspection.

I could be wrong. Chickadees typically build over top of other nests when they appropriate another’s claim, without removing the old. They usually pile moss directly on top of the old nest.

A bluebird was perched on the nest box when we approached but flew as we got closer. I suspect it was her nest material that was removed. We’ll have to wait and see how this plays out.

Though early in the season, at least a few birds are showing interest in nesting.

See you next week.
