Nest Box Update 5.16.23

Top Photo: Eastern bluebird eggs.

We have three nest boxes which have at least some activity, one has four eggs, one has a complete new bluebird nest, and one has only just a suggestion of a bird’s interest in making a nest inside, one twig was placed in the middle of the berry basket inside the box.

The Cow Pasture nest is doing well. The house wren that was inside the box incubating the four eggs as we approached quickly flew out when the access door was opened.

The Explore the Wild and Into the Mist nest boxes are both inactive and have no nest material within.

The nest box on the east side of the parking deck has seen action this season. It has fledged five bluebirds. It’s now the potential new home of house wrens. That is, if one twig placed in the berry basket inside the box is an indication of nest building. We’ll have to wait to be sure if the birds proceed.

The nest box on the west side of the parking deck has also seen action this season. It has recently fledged five chickadees. Now, however, bluebirds have taken over and have constructed their own nest inside the box. No eggs yet.

So, three empty, and three active nest boxes, at least in part. One nest may soon have young (Cow Pasture), one may have eggs (Parking Deck West), and the other may have a complete nest by next week (Parking Deck East).

Stay tuned.
