Lucky Squirrels

Top Photo: Eastern gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) with apple.

Eastern gray squirrels are known for their industrious foraging behavior. Besides their nonstop foraging for natural food items like elm seeds, pine nuts, walnuts, mulberries and other naturals, depending on the season, they’re constantly in and out our many trash receptacles here at the museum.

The natural…

Pine nuts.
What’s left after squirrel removes outer flesh of hickory nut.
Mulberry tree.

They pull everything out of our trash receptacles from crackers to candy, and even sometimes healthy food like apples. It seems like a good deal for the nimble little tree squirrels.

The recycled…

What looks like a pbj sandwich.
Ring pop.
Crackers.

The squirrel pictured at the top of the page and below found a big juicy red apple. It looks like an Envy apple.

Big, juicy red apple.

Lucky squirrel. A big sweet apple it is!

Forage on, gray squirrel.

Though our squirrels are rather used to people and allow a close approach, please don’t attempt to hand feed them, they are wild animals.
