2014-2015 Creeper Shot: In the Can

Once again, the annual brown creeper shot is in the can. Each winter I happen across one of these birds that allows me a close enough approach so as to get a photo or two. Most of the time the shots are of the bird’s tail, a piece of the wing, or very much out of focus due to the bird’s frenetic behavior, and my camera’s slow reaction time.

On Saturday, February 28, while standing at the Red Wolf Enclosure waiting for the hormones to kick in on our female red wolf, a creeper landed on an elm tree in the enclosure. As the bird made a rapid spiraling ascent up the trunk, I was able to get a half dozen shots of the little bird as it searched the tree bark’s nooks and crannies for insect eggs, larvae, etc.

Here, the bird reaches behind the bark with its thin, decurved bill to extract some sort of insect food item (2/28/15).

Till next winter, brown creeper!

I agree, a tough bird to photograph, especially with a point and shoot camera!
      Thanks,
