Three of a Kind & a Visitor

Just to update you on the green herons in the Wetlands, I was able to get a shot showing three nestlings in the first nest (NS1). Meanwhile, over at NS2 on the other side of the Wetlands… The young heron in the above photo was in the same tree as NS2 and was being watched very carefully by the adult tending to her two nestlings. The immature bird got within four or five feet of the nest and decided toRead more

Bluebird Update 7.2.13

I was anxious to check the nest boxes this morning. With all the torrential downpours we’ve had lately I worried for the nestlings in the two remaining active nests. As it happens, it wasn’t the rain I needed to be concerned about. The birds in the Cow Pasture nest next to the Train Tunnel seemed content as I opened their nest box. It’s difficult to see but it appears all five birds are still present. They will surely fledge beforeRead more

Bluebird Update 6/25/13

The season is coming to and end. All we have active at this time are two nest boxes, one at the Cow Pasture near the Train Tunnel and the other at the Butterfly House. Each nest contains five nestlings. All other nest boxes have been cleaned and readied for use but I’m afraid they won’t see any more activity until next spring, except perhaps as night time roosts. The Cow Pasture birds will probably still be in the nest nextRead more

Bluebird Update 6.18.13

While the drive to reproduced has slowed, there is still some activity in some of our bird nest boxes. Four of our six nest boxes are empty, but life is just beginning in two of those boxes. Three weeks ago the Cow Pasture nest was empty. Two weeks ago the nest had two bluebird eggs within. One week ago it held five eggs. When I opened the nest box this week (6/18) I expected to find five bobble-headed bluebird nestlings.Read more

Bluebird Update 6/11/13

I was a bit apprehensive as I started my nest box inspections this week. Last Friday we had a day of very heavy rain and thunderstorms and I wasn’t sure of what to expect when I opened the nest boxes. Some areas received five plus inches of rain! I had also been told by Ranger Rock that, out of curiosity, he had looked inside the nest box next to the Bungee Jump on Saturday morning and had found three deadRead more

Bluebird Update 6/4/13

At this time last week this nest box (the Cow Pasture, above) was completely empty, no nest material and certainly no eggs. A new nest has been built and so far two eggs have been deposited in the box. Last week there were four eggs in the nest which is next to the Bungee Jump. I and Ranger Kristin peeked into the box Saturday (6/1) and there were only three eggs. What happen to the other egg? The egg had to be removed sometimeRead more

Bluebird Update 5.7.13

The heavy rain and chilly nights of the past several days seems to have had little effect on the chickadees and bluebirds that are nesting on our Bluebird Trail here at the Museum. All occupants of our nest boxes seem to be doing well, even flourishing. The bluebird nestlings in the “Cow Pasture” nest seem about ready to fledge. It’s difficult to see exactly how many nestlings are crowded into that nest but it appears as though there are four.Read more

Bluebird Update June 21, 2012

The nestlings that were in the nest boxes at the Train Tunnel (4) and Butterfly House (5) have all fledged, flown the coop, become free flying birds. We now have only one active nest, the nest next to the Picnic Dome. This nest has four eggs which should hatch very soon. The eggs were first noted in the nest on June 5 which was two weeks prior to the latest inspection of the nest boxes. Given the 18 day averageRead more

Bluebird Update June 14, 2012

The occupants of the nest box at the Train Tunnel are progressing as they should, no problems with water and the birds sat tight when I opened the box to have a look at them. All three nest boxes in Catch the Wind are empty. I don’t think that they will be occupied again this season, but we’ll have to wait and see to be sure. Many thanks to Landscape Tech, Jose for cutting nice clear paths for me atRead more
