There has been no activity in any of the nest boxes for the past two weeks. A house wren nest had been started in the nest box at the Cow Pasture, but apparently the birds have moved on. Likewise, the bluebirds that started construction of a nest in the box at Woodlands Classroom have not been seen or heard from in two weeks. I’m calling it. The season is officially over!
Here’s the totals for birds fledged this and previous years.
Abbreviations: eastern bluebird (EABL), Carolina chickadee (CACH), house wren (HOWR).
YEAR | EABL | CACH | HOWR | TOTAL |
2018 | 16 | 12 | 5 | 33 |
2017 | 3 | 9 | 11 | 23 |
2016 | 19 | 6 | 0 | 25 |
2015 | 18 | 7 | 0 | 25 |
2014 | 27 | 3 | 0 | 30 |
2013 | 20 | 13 | 0 | 33 |
2012 | 20 | 6 | 0 | 26 |
ALL | 123 | 56 | 16 | 195 |
That’s an average of 27.86 birds per year and about;
17.57 eastern bluebirds
8 Carolina chickadees
2.29 house wrens
that we assisted in adding to the local avifauna each year. Not bad.
Thanks for the count, Ranger Greg!
