Bluebird Update 6.9.15

We are now hosting two bluebird nests with a total of seven eggs.

The Cow Pasture nest box remains empty. There’s still time, and this box typically does well, so I’m hoping for some activity soon.

The nest box next to the Bungee (Take Off) looks like it did last week when I inspected the nest boxes, it has an unfinished bluebird nest inside. I wasn’t sure the bluebirds would follow through on this nest because of its less than open location, and so far they haven’t.

The Sailboat Pond nest box contained the beginning of a paper wasp nest. I removed the wasp nest.

Amanda makes noise and taps on the side of the nest box before opening so as not to startle any occupants (Sailboat Pond - 6/9/15).

The Amphimeadow came through with four bluebird eggs.

A wasp flew out of the nest box next to the Picnic Dome. No nest was found inside, either bird or wasp, so we closed the door and moved on to the Butterfly House. There, we found 3 bluebird eggs.

Typically, second broods are smaller in size than the first brood of the season. Still, there’s room for at least one more egg in this nest. We’ll have to wait till next week to see if the bluebirds agree.

So, we have three empty nest boxes, the Cow Pasture, Sailboat Pond, and Picnic Dome nest boxes. Three nest boxes have bluebird nests within. The Bungee nest is an incomplete nest and may not see further activity. The Amphimeadow nest box holds four eggs. The Butterfly House nest box contains three bluebird eggs. Will there be more eggs next week?

See you then!
