Bluebird Update 6.3.15

I can happily report that, where last week there were six empty nest boxes, there are now only three.

The Cow Pasture, Sailboat Pond, and Picnic Dome nest boxes remain untouched, nothing but an empty berry basket inside each. The Bungee Jump, Amphimeadow, and Butterfly House nests are all active, each for the second time this season!

The nest box next to the Bungee Jump has the beginnings of a bluebird nest inside its cedar walls. This nest box has already produced four chickadees. I’m anxious to see what happens next, since this nest box is located in a rather closed in area, it’s backed by woods, and shrubs surround the front and sides. This nest has still not been completed. We’ll have to wait to see what happens here.

The nest box in the Amphimeadow, which has so far produced four bluebirds, now has a second nest. There were no eggs in the nest, but the nest is complete and ready for laying.

The Butterfly nest box has fledged four bluebirds thus far. It too, is ready to go again.

So, we now have three empty nest boxes and three which contain the nests of bluebirds. Will the bluebird building a nest in the Bungee nest box finish it and lay eggs. Will there be eggs in the Amphimeadow and Butterfly House nest boxes. Will the other nest boxes attract bluebirds, chickadees, or some other species of cavity nesting bird? All these questions and more will be answered next week.

Stayed tuned!
