Bluebird Update June 21, 2012

Female sits tight on eggs in the nest box located near the Picnic Dome (6/19/12).

The nestlings that were in the nest boxes at the Train Tunnel (4) and Butterfly House (5) have all fledged, flown the coop, become free flying birds. We now have only one active nest, the nest next to the Picnic Dome. This nest has four eggs which should hatch very soon. The eggs were first noted in the nest on June 5 which was two weeks prior to the latest inspection of the nest boxes. Given the 18 day average for incubation we should have young in the nest within the next 3 – 4 days.

So, as of June 19, we have five empty nests and one active nest with four eggs. I don’t expect any further activity in the remaining nest, but I’m going to clean the boxes out just in case.

See you next week.
