Warm and Wet

The past few days have been rather warm and humid, if not rainy. That will all change soon, there’s colder air moving our way. But until that cold front rolls over us, enjoy the warmth as some of our wildlife has been.

Although the sun was behind the clouds this Yellow-bellied Slider was out enjoying the warmth of the day, it was near 70 degrees at the time (12/5/13).
This female bullfrog thought it warm enough to sit out on a rock (12/5/13).
A gray squirrel enjoying a break in the gnawing of pine cones. I’m not sure what that is on the tip of its nose?
When it wasn’t raining, mist formed over the Wetlands.
Shot through the mist, these mergansers make a handsome couple.

I don’t think the warmer weather matters very much to the mergansers, as long as the water doesn’t freeze and they can get at the fish and tadpoles beneath the surface, they’re happy.

The mergansers above seem to be paired with one another. The work of the past few weeks, the strutting and dancing about the Wetlands, seems to have paid off for these two. In fact, I’ve noticed two distinct pairs within the last few days. The males will still perform pair-bond displays to reinforce the bond, but it seems at least two pairs have made their choices. Good luck, mergansers.

Great squirrel shot! Looks like the broken off end of a twig behind him that appears at the end of his nose. Time for Photoshop…
