Can you identify the bird in the photo? You’ve probably already figured out that the bird is a hawk. Can you identify it as to species (5 points). Extra points for giving the age of the bird (5 points). Double points for naming the tree the bird is perched upon (10 points).

If possible, indicate how you identified the bird. What distinguishing marks or characteristics do you see that makes this bird the species that you say it is and not another species.

If you don’t know, take a guess.

    Adult Yellow [red] Tailed Hawk
    Because of the variable plain and banded areas of chest.
    Yellow Poplar

    Probably missing something, but that’s what I’ve got this morning.

    I’m thinking Red-tailed hawk, adult (eye looks brown, not yellow), Tulip Tree.

      Keep those answers coming in. I should mention that the hawk was seen right here in Durham, NC. In fact, it was right here at the Museum within the past few days.
