Just some odes

Each year I post some pictures of odes (usually the same species) that can easily be found in our Wetlands. Here’s this year’s group. These are all very common species which can be seen just about anywhere that there’s water. Their abundance, however, does nothing to diminish their allure.

Male Blue Dasher (Pachydiplax longipennis).
Male Slaty Skimmer (Libellula incesta).
Male and female Slaty Skimmer in “wheel” configuration (transfering sperm).
Male Eastern Amberwing (Perithemis tenera).
Male Common Whitetail (Plathemis lydia).

And finally, a close shot of…

Male Great Blue Skimmer (Libellula vibrans). Note how this ode grasps the twig, and the front pair of legs folded behind the head.

Enjoy!
