Bluebird Update 5/20/14

All’s quiet of the Bluebird Front. While last week we had two empty nests, those nests having fledged six chickadees, and four nests full of nestling bluebirds, we now have only one occupied nest. The Butterfly House nest is the only active nest at this time. It contains four bluebird nestlings who are ready to make their way out into the world. They won’t be there next week, that’s for sure.

What looks like four nestling bluebirds in the only remaining occupied nest, the Butterfly House nest (5/20/14).

I did manage to find one unhatched egg in the Picnic Dome nest. I knew at least one of the eggs hadn’t hatched in that nest, but couldn’t see the egg due to the birds on top of it during the previous two inspections. It was still in the nest today (5/20/14).

Although the bluebird nestlings that occupied this nest have departed, their would be sibling remained (5/20/14).

Here’s where we are as of 20, May. Since last week, eleven bluebirds have fledged. The only active nest is the one at the Butterfly House and that will be empty very soon. Besides the eleven bluebirds there have been six chickadees fledged. That’s a total of 17 birds added to the local avifauna. All that remains is to clean the recently evacuated nest boxes and get them ready for new occupants. And that is being done now!

Will we see second broods from the previous nesters? Will there be different species using the nest boxes? Stay tuned.

See you next week.
