Bluebird Update 3.24.15

If you were to scan through the photos below and compare them to the photos from last week’s Bluebird Update you may notice similarities in the photos. There’s not been much progress in any of the nests.

There are, though, two new developments to report. The nest box behind the Sailboat Pond in Catch the Wind has a fully executed chickadee nest within and a bluebird has shown at least fledgling interest in starting a nest at the Picnic Dome nest box.

Take a look at the photos and read below what’s going on with our six nest boxes.

The Train Tunnel or Cow Pasture nest box is still empty.

Last week, the nest box next to Take Off (Bungee) in Catch the Wind had the beginnings of a chickadee nest inside. It also had two bluebirds sitting on its roof. No further work by either chickadee or bluebird has been done.

This nest looks the same as it did last week, with a sprinkling of moss from a chickadee (3/24/15).

The big change from last week was the discovery of a completed chickadee nest in the box behind the Sailboat Pond. I saw two chickadees going in and out of the box last week but didn’t inspect the box for fear of disturbing the birds. The nest was probably well on its way at that time.

As with the Bungee nest, the Amphimeadow nest looks much the same as last week. The pine needles and grass look to be moved around some, but little, if anything, seems to have been added.

The nest box at the Picnic Dome on the south side of the campus contained no nest material last week. Several blades of dried grass have been placed in the nest box. Not much, but a start!

It looks as though someone, or some bird, has moved the moss around a bit inside the Butterfly House nest box, but nothing new has been added to this chickadee nest.

We currently have one empty nest box, the Train Tunnel (Cow Pasture) nest box, three chickadee nests, one just started, another completed, and another nearly complete at the Bungee, Sailboat Pond, and Butterfly House, respectively. There are two bluebird nests started, one at the Amphimeadow in Catch the Wind, the other, with just two or three blades of grass added, at the Picnic Dome.

See you next week!
